One of a Kind:
Hazelnuts are the only nut crop produced commercially in B.C.
About:
Hazelnuts mature during the summer months and naturally fall out of their husk when ripe in the fall. Growers wait for all hazelnuts to drop to the ground before harvest. They sweep or rake hazelnuts and collect them by hand or machine before the onset of rainy weather to maintain quality.
Hazelnuts are high in vitamin E, copper and manganese, and a good source of vitamin B6, magnesium and thiamin.
Most Common Varieties:
Oregon State University varieties: Yamhill, Jefferson, Mc Donald, Wepster.
Did you know?
- B.C. has approximately 75 hazelnut growers.
- They cultivate sustainable tree varieties adaptable to B.C.’s climate.
- The economic lifespan of a hazelnut tree is 50 years.
- A hazelnut tree’s lifecycle begins with three years of an establishment phase, five to six years at about 50% production, and reaches full production at 8 to 10 years.
- Hazelnuts grow in clusters of one to six nuts, each covered by a shell and a husk that encases the nut.
- When the nut is ripe, the husk of some species and varieties releases the nut, while in others the husk must be picked and mechanically separated from the nuts.
- The kernel of the nut is edible and used raw or roasted, and as an ingredient in many commercial, baked, and culinary products.
