Chanelle’s family recipe for apple crisp
“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” – F. Scott Fitzgerald. I wonder if he was referring to apple ‘crisp’? If he was, he definitely meant my family’s recipe (credit to my Auntie Liza) for this Best-Ever Apple Crisp. A true fall classic in our home and a beautiful way to celebrate the changing seasons if you ask me.
Prep time: 15 mins
Cooking: 45 mins
Ingredients
Apple mixture
- 10 cups peeled and sliced B.C. apples (approx. 10 small apples) see notes for apple variety*
- 6 tbsp B.C. flour like Anita’s Organic Mill Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- 2 tbsp cinnamon
- 2 tsp brown sugar
Topping
- 2 1/2 cups B.C. oats like Anita’s Organic Mill Whole Grain Rolled Oats
- 2 cups B.C. flour like Anita’s Organic Mill Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar1 1/2 cups cold unsalted B.C. butter like Avalon Dairy
- Pinch of kosher salt
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350 F
- Peel and slice apples. Place them in a rectangular baking dish (I used 10” x 6” but a 9” x 13” will also work)
- In a small bowl, combine 2 tbsp cinnamon, 6 tbsp flour and 2 tsp brown sugar. Mix well then pour over the apples and toss to coat the apples
- In a separate bowl, combine the remaining cups of flour, oats, brown sugar, and salt, and mix well
- Add thin squares of cold butter and cut in using a pastry cutter, fork or knife (careful to not warm the butter)
- Spread the cold butter mixture over the apples
- Place pan in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes then broil for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
Notes
- *I used B.C. Gala apples which are a sweeter variety. If you opt for a tarter apple such as Granny Smith, you may want to add another 1-2 tsp of brown sugar to coat your apples
- This recipe can easily be halved. Cook time will remain the same
